Exciting Times in the valley: Oracle buys BEA, MSQL Bought by Oracle, Apple joins Vudu and Netflix+LG

In just under a month I will be attending an event in whichOracle, MySQL, and Sun Microsystems are set to have a presence.

Today all three companies made noise with Sun acquiring open source database software maker MYSQL for $1 billion and Oracle acquiring BEA systems for $8.5 billion.

2 interesting moves. I am sure the blogosphere will chime in with opinions a plenty. MYSQL was seen as the next logical candidate out of the handful of open source companies to go public. Sun Mircosystems has been one of the most open source friendly larger entities so it seems like a good fit. Its great to see Sun investing heavily in open source and embracing the idea that the LAMP stack is enterprise ready.

MacWorld

Steve Jobs made a slew of announcements yesterday at his keynote at Macworld. A ultra thin laptop, some new ipod and iphone features, and a variety of other less sexy product announcements.

To me the biggest announcement was Apple’s addition of movie rentals to their Itunes store and the revamping of Apple TV. Earlier I discussed Netflix’s forray into the digital living room with their partnership to LG and how it will affect Vudu. In that blog I predicted that Apple would make a move into this growing market.

“While their are a handful of other companies making waves in this space, something tells me Apple will dive head first into this space and steal a lot of their thunder. AppleTV has been a disappointment thus far, but you can

Commercial of the week 1/16/08 (Monster.com- Don’t Fight Monday Commercial)

Although many people have moved on from Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com to more industry or geographic specific job listing depository websites, I must admit I was taken aback by this Monster.com commercial.

It’s a very gripping commercial, full of intense visual imagery and music to match. Is it the end of the world? Aliens? an attack? No it’s the dreaded daybreak of Monday, the beginning of the work week. Many of us loathe Monday morning’s and our servitude to less than ideal jobs.

While somewhat dramatic, I really enjoyed this out of the box advertisement that I am sure will resonate with way too many viewers.

Alex Boone, James Laurinitis, Marcus Freeman, and Malcolm Jenkins Coming Back to OSU

Breaking news. Award winning LB and All American James Laurinitis has opted to stay at Ohio State for his senior season. By doing so he is passing up a likely top ten pick and millions of dollars to stay at Ohio State.

The Cleveland PD broke the story. Here is the quote

“Talking to my mom this weekend, whenever I talked to her about coming back next year with the Buckeyes I was more excited than anything about the NFL. I’m having too much fun at Ohio State.”

A week ago it looked their would be another exodus of talent similar to last year when Teddy Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez, and Antonio Pittman all left college early for the NFL.

Although thought to be leaning towards leaving, the loss to LSU and other factors inspired Boone, Freeman, Jenkins, and now Laurinitis to return for their final year. Laurinitis was deemed to be a top ten pick while Jenkins would have likely gone somewhere in the latter part of round one.

The Buckeyes did however lose Vernon Gholtson to the draft, but will return a very talented and experienced team in 08, hopefully one that can get over the hump this time around. Things ramp up early for the Buckeyes in 2008 with a road trip to Los Angeles to take on USC who might open with the number 1 ranking with Ohio State believed to be in the top 3 or 4.

NFL Division Round Playoff Predictions

Pardon my lack of blogging of late as its been incredible week of travel and work. Got some things in the pipeline though.

4 pretty interesting games this weekend. Injuries will play a big role in them. Here is what I got

Seattle vs Green Bay

in Green Bay, Packers favored by 7 1/2

The only upset of the weekend will be this game. Its going to be a one score game either way so taking the Seahawks is a smart play in my opinion. In the end I like Seattle’s defense in stopping the running game and causing turnovers.

Going to predict an exciting 27-21 game.

Commercial of the Week 1/10/07 Subway Referee Refreshing Moment commercial

Contrary to popular belief, I am still alive, working, writing, blogging, and living despite a disappointing loss this last week. With that being said commercial of the week lives on with this new Subway advertisement.

Lots of great football on this month, and its great to see Subway segmenting a commercial to jaded and cynical football fans. Sports fans love to be critical of referees and often come up with potential ulterior motives for them to be so incompetent at times. This commercial cashes in with some shock value as many believe making up blown calls is just part of the game. Little lost on how it connects to sandwiches, but I really can’t argue with any Subway advertisement without Jared Fogle.

Bourbon Street= Epicenter of Debauchery

Last night was my first time out on the famed Bourbon Street. Bourbon Street lived up to its billing and then some. Imagine 30,000 -50,000 crazed college football fans looking to blow off some steam the night before a much anticipated game. Bourbon Street spans about 12 blocks, has no open container laws, is closed down for the crowds, and has a wide assortment of restaurants , bars, strip clubs, and mini marks that sell everything you need to have a good time on the street. Its a scene I hope to return to tonight in celeberation.

I am off to the game in a little bit. The outcome will most likely dictate my mood for the rest of January. I can’t wait. I have to go as the house keeping lady is here. Go bucks
