Iphone’s Biggest Drawback- Lack of MMS and Viewmymessage.com

March 11, 2008

I absolutely love my Iphone and have recommended it to a lot of friends have gone onto positive experiences with it as well.

Initially I had some gripes, but over time the various software upgrades alleviated most of my issues. However there is still one glaring defect that mocks me on a weekly basis.

The Iphone does not get MMS (Multimedia messaging Services) messages like pictures and video. For whatever reason its just not part of the functionality of the Iphone.

Initially this really didn’t bother me that much as MMS messages sent to me could be accessed via a website called viewmymessage.com. Whenever a picture or video text message came my way I would get a message alerting me and telling me the necessary credentials to use on the website to view the sent message.

The only problem. Viewmymessage.com doesn’t really work. The majority of time the website relays the following message after a lengthy delay.

A quick Google search shows that the problem is pretty consistent and widespread.

Apple forums excerpts below

“Viewmymessage.com has been an overall unreliable service. If you try it on a standard computer it sometimes doesn’t work.”

” I really (really!) cannot stand the viewmymessage service. I have yet to get a single one to work. Very frustrating. “

“You all should know that the viewmymessage.com is a AT&T web site. The problem is not an iPhone problem. I have attempted to view messages as well, and it does not matter if I am on a PC or on my Mac. There is an issue with AT&T’s webserver. The problems I encounter is that it takes 4-5 times to enter the information ie Msg. ID and Password before it takes”

With millions of people depending on this website on a daily basis, you would think AT&T would realize the level of IT investment and infrastructure commitment it would take to build a reliable and stable message depository.

Hopefully Apple or AT&T will address the situation sooner than later, but for now its sticks out worse than a beautiful women with a broken nose.

I can only hope that the beautiful woman with the broken nose gets help soon or the 8 -10 mms messages I get per week will be going to a blackberry phone and I’ll just buy an Ipod.
