The NCAA Baseball tournament which culminates in the College World Series has over the years provided a lot of great under the radar stories.
With a very odd elimination structure as well aggressive scheduling, very often college baseball provides for some of the most dynamic sports storylines although they can be overshadowed by the culmination of the NBA and NHL seasons.
This weekend provided two of the most incredible box scores I have seen in a long time.
I'll start with my Buckeyes who lost 24-8 on Friday night to Georgia, putting them one loss away from elimination.
They rallied back on Saturday with a win over Marist, leading them to a rematch with Georgia on Sunday Morning.
Despite having lost 24-8, less then 40 hours previous, the Bucks stayed alive and eliminated Georgia by a 13-6 score. The Buckeyes' prize? An hour of rest before playing top seeded Florida State in what would be the Buckeyes 4th game in 3 days. The result? Ugg not pretty.
Yes, the Buckeyes lost 37-6 and were down a ridiculous 32-0 in the fifth inning. With a lack of pitching depth and a bunch of bombers on the Seminoles, the carnage was epically memorable for a tournament game.
But that story pales in comparison to potentially the most incredible baseball game of all time.
So let's start with the obvious. Yes, this baseball game was 25 innings. It lasted more then 7 hours.
Next up is Austin Wood. He came in the 7th inning, threw 169 pitches and didn't give up A SINGLE HIT for 12+ innings. That's honestly one of the most remarkable things ever...inside or outside of sports.
Pitching more then 9 innings......when you are a closer.....without giving up a hit.....in extra innings.....in the NCAA tournament....Just amazing.
O and how did Texas do the next day after playing almost 3 games in one day?
Down 6-10 going into the ninth, they tied the game before hitting a walk off grand slam. An amazing 8 run ninth to keep their incredible season going.
Highlights (Great Fan Support by Texas Fans, staying for this epic game)
