The New Thing in Advertising- Talking about the Recession

There is a growing new trend in advertising where the Fortune 1000 has stopped ignoring the recession and has now put in the forfront of their advertising campaigns. Below are 3 ads that take a variety of tones on the economy. AllState really does a good job going the nostalgic route, explaining their company founding took place during the Great recession.

Jack In The Box takes a comical approach and embraces people’s needs for fiscal responsibility in pitching a new value meal. I believe they have always had this combo but are now giving it a name and reemphasing how cheap it is.

Lastly, I cannot embed it, but here is a link to Fedex Kinkos videos poking fun of company’s need to downsize overhead. Its mildly funny, but does make a solid point that businesses are streamlining like crazy during these tough times. This isn’t breaking news, but I think its a better strategy to openly position your company is adjusting to the economic climate even though a lot of big companies are choosing to ignore the elephant in the room. It’s early in 2009, but I would like for more advertisers to go both the humor and emotional/nostalgic route in attracting customers.
