Although not an avid hockey fan, it remains as one of my more favorite sports to watch in person and on TV. Its always amazed me how hockey players avoid serious injuries with all the variables in play (the boards, the ice, sticks, goal posts, puck, and skates) .
Unfortunately tonight Richard Zednik fell victim to a freak injury that has clouded my mind since I saw it on Sports Center.
Stop here if you have a weak stomach.
In the third period, Zednik’s throat was sliced open by one of his teammates skate. In the 3 or 4 second after the cut, Zednik was smart enough to get up and skate to the bench where his quick acting trainer had a towel ready to apply pressure.
Zednik left a thick stream of blood in his wake. Although potentially too graphic, the visual shown on Sports Center of the large amount of blood left on the ice in those few seconds speaks to the severity of the injury.

Late reports are positive as Zednik is in stable condition at the hospital and has successfully undergone surgery. While relieved, both teams were torn on whether the game should have continued.
